What happens if a shooting license is not renewed on time?
The possession of firearms for sporting purposes in France is strictly regulated by law. One of the cornerstones of this regulatory framework is the sports shooting license, issued annually by the French Shooting Federation (FFTir). It is not only a pass to practice shooting but also an essential component to justify the legitimacy of firearm possession to the authorities. But what happens if you forget—or decide—not to renew it on time?

1. Reminder: The Role of the Shooting License

The valid shooting license serves two main functions:

  • Sports Practice: It provides access to approved shooting ranges and facilities.

  • Legal Justification: To possess a category B weapon or certain category C weapons, you must be licensed, as this proves that you practice within a legal framework.

Without a valid license, your status regarding your weapons changes drastically in the eyes of the law.

2. The Consequences of Non-Renewal

If the license is not renewed before the deadline (usually September 30th or December 31st depending on the clubs), several effects occur:

a) Loss of Legal Possession Status

The possession of category B weapons requires permanently meeting the conditions provided by the Internal Security Code, including having a valid shooting license.
If this condition is no longer met, your permits become void.

b) Obligation to Transfer or Neutralize

Once your license expires, you are no longer legally authorized to keep your affected weapons.
You must:

  • Transfer them to a gunsmith or another licensed shooter (through a legally recorded transfer in the SIA).

  • Have them neutralized by an approved gunsmith.

  • Turn them over to the competent authority (prefecture or police).

c) Risk of Sanctions

Keeping a weapon without meeting the legal possession conditions is a crime punishable by criminal penalties:

  • Up to 5 years of imprisonment.

  • Up to €75,000 fine.

  • Permanent confiscation of the weapons.

3. The Reminder Procedure by the Prefecture

In practice, if your license expires, the administration is informed via the weapons information system (SIA).
The prefecture will then send you a letter (often registered) asking you to:

  • Prove the renewal of your license within a short period.

  • Or declare the transfer/neutralization of the affected weapons.

If there is no response, administrative seizure may be ordered.

4. How to Avoid the Issue?

  • Plan Ahead: Start the renewal process several weeks before the deadline set by your club.

  • Check Your SIA Record: Ensure your license appears as valid.

  • Communicate with Your Club: A simple administrative oversight can be corrected quickly if you respond in time.

5. In Summary

Failing to renew your shooting license on time quickly results in the loss of your right to possess certain weapons and exposes you to severe penalties.
The best solution is prevention: a clear schedule, early renewal, and tracking your status in the SIA.

Tip: If you plan to stop sports shooting, arrange the sale or neutralization of your weapons before the end of your license to avoid any legal issues.
